COURSE DESCRIPTION
English Home Language (HL) is a comprehensive course designed to develop learners’ proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, viewing, writing, and presenting in English. Aligned with the South African Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS), the course equips learners with advanced language skills needed for academic success, effective communication, and lifelong learning.
Learners engage with a wide range of literary and non-literary texts, including novels, drama, poetry, short stories, speeches, essays, media texts, and visual texts. Through critical reading and thoughtful discussion, they develop the ability to analyse, interpret, evaluate, and appreciate language and literature while understanding how language shapes meaning in different contexts.
The course also strengthens creative and transactional writing skills, enabling learners to express ideas clearly, accurately, and confidently. Emphasis is placed on grammar, vocabulary development, language structures, and effective communication to prepare learners for examinations, tertiary education, and the workplace.
CERTIFICATION
Upon successful completion of this course, learners will have acquired the knowledge, skills, and competencies expected of English Home Language learners in accordance with the CAPS curriculum. They will be well prepared for school-based assessments, controlled tests, examinations, and the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations where applicable.
A Certificate of Course Completion may be awarded by the learning institution upon meeting the course requirements. This certificate recognises the learner’s successful participation and completion of the prescribed learning programme.
